Floating (Dry Erase) Figures

SUPPLIES:

  • Glass Bowl

  • Dry Erase Marker

  • Water

NOW FOLLOW THESE STEPS:

  • Step 1: Using your dry erase marker, draw a picture on the bottom of the glass bowl.

  • Step 2: Wait 1-5 min. (until marker has dried)

  • Step 3: Slow pour water into the bowl (the water will slide under your picture, making it come off the bowl).

  • Step 4: MAKE YOUR MOVE!!!

HERE’S THE SCIENCE:

  • Surface Tension: “the tension of the surface film of a liquid caused by the attraction of the particles in the surface layer by the bulk of the liquid, which tends to minimize the surface area.

  • Cohesion: (in physics) “the sticking together of particles of the same substance.

As the dry erase marker dries on the bottom of the bowl, cohesion is forming. Once, the cohesion is completed (dries), the surface tension of the water pulls the dry erase marker right off the bowl, and allows the dry erase marker molecules to float freely on top of the water molecules.
